Attic Conversions | Planning on converting your Attic?
Converting your Attic?
The attic can be a major issue for many people who own an old home in Ireland. Attic Conversions make use of many attics rough storage space. Many people have decided to convert their attic space into an extra room or even a nice naturally lit living space using sky lights, which makes a nice quiet sanctuary to retreat too. So what exactly is needed for an attic conversion in Ireland?
Planning permission required for converting your attic
Well, when it comes to applying for planning permission for attic conversions, Irish planning laws can be somewhat vague and can vary from community to community. Many of the planning permission guidelines for attic conversions typically require some kind of inspection of the basics, such as upgrading electrical, plumbing, etc. You want to check with the authorities in your area about what you need to do for planning permission when wanting to do an attic conversion.
As a well known construction company in Ireland, we will review all the planning permission guidelines for attic conversions before starting construction. As our experience shows, however, if there is some structural changes to the roof when you are doing your attic conversion, such as eye dormers and mansards, you might need to apply for planning permission.
In Dublin, however, you might not even need to apply for planning permission when you are planning to do an attic conversion since attics are typically designed to be an uninhabitable storage space. Even though many people do convert attics into bedrooms, game rooms, or home offices. Though this is legal, an attic is still an attic and you cannot add an extra bedroom if you sell your house. You could state that the attic is converted, but it is still considered an attic.
Is an attic conversion easy to do?
Well, it can be easy or it can be difficult, depending on how you want to convert the attic. If the conversion is complex and requires some major changes to the roof structure, you might need to apply for some kind of planning permission. Some attic conversions are unique and have a small pavilion at the center of the roof. This allows for some extra headroom and allowing for extra natural light to come into the newly created room. Other attic conversions have mansards installed and give that extra headroom in the area where you want to have a bed placed. You might want a mansard in your attic to allow enough room for a small water closet or sink to brush your teeth before you go to bed at night or when you get up in the morning. The mansard side of an attic can also allow for a closet to be built.
Another kind of attic conversion that we build often is one which has eye dormers installed. Eye dormers are a great addition to an attic conversion. Not only gives your attic more space, but also allows for a larger window to allow you to enjoy a view of your area.
Attic Conversions with Skylights
Last, but not least, we also do simple attic conversions with the installation of beautiful skylights for natural light. The simplicity can be great for the studio effect, but the one drawback of this kind of attic conversion is that you do not have much headroom to stand in. This lives little standing room and we do recommend that you would place your bed in an area where you can sit up if you wish to do so when you want to either read or watch television.
Whatever attic conversion you want, we can do it for you. We will also look into the planning permission guidelines for attic conversions in your community also.
